What is Sterling Silver and Why is it not 100% pure Silver? Silver, the chemical element with the symbol Ag and atomic number 47, has been used since antiquity in currency, ornaments and jewelry, as well as utensils (silverware) . Pure silver is very prone to tarnish and has pliable, soft nature. It can easily be damaged and lose its shape. Sterling is the name used for .925 pure silver mixed with other metals, often copper and/ or zinc. Sterling silver is a superior medium for crafting jewelry. It is harder and less prone to tarnish. All items are stamped 925 unless otherwise stated.
